Mission Statement

Cents Ability's mission is to empower New York City high school students to achieve their goals through prudent and informed management of their financial resources.

We are a group of volunteers dedicated to providing underprivileged high school students with the financial tools and knowledge to achieve their life goals. Providing basic finance classes, Cents Ability has partnered with local and national organizations such as New York Cares. Started in 2004 by John Moore and Alexa du Pont, the program is taught in 6 hours so that even the busiest teens and the volunteers who teach them can manage the commitment. Volunteers working alongside the National Endowment for Financial Education developed the curriculum.

Cents Ability obtained its 501(c)3 nonprofit status in May 2004. Since then classes have been taught at The Door, the Union Settlement Association, Monroe Academy, Washington Irving High School, The Chinatown Manpower Project, SCAN La Guardia, Harlem RBI, The Albert G. Oliver Program, and the John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy Charter school.

I taught a Cents Ability class at the Children's Aid Society on the Upper East Side 2 weeks ago. The class was about credit cards, student loans, etc and the risks/benefits of using credit. The Cents Ability curriculum is prepackaged and easy to learn and teach to students. It's in a Powerpoint presentation format which gave me the opportunity to really connect with the students. It was a wonderful experience teaching young adults the importance of managing their credit and helping them understand the dangers of credit cards. I can't wait to volunteer with Cents Ability again!
