Mission Statement

To protect and preserve the irreplaceable historic resources of Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear region.

Description

The Historic Wilmington Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses its efforts towards preserving the architectural heritage of the Lower Cape Fear region. Since its formation in 1966, the Historic Wilmington Foundation has successfully saved over 100 historic properties from demolition. Our mission is to continue promoting historic preservation in the community through educational programs, exhibits, community involvement and revolving fund activities.

Two of our most recognizable programs are Tar Heels Go Walking and Legacy Architectural Salvage. Tar Heels Go Walking a partnership with New Hanover County Schools where Historic Wilmington Foundation leads third grade children on a tour of downtown Wilmington, introducing them to Wilmington's history, architecture, public art and the role played by historic preservation in their home town. Legacy Architectural Salvage is a salvage warehouse and store accepting architectural element donations which are c.1960 and older. Items you can expect to find are things like molding, flooring, hardware, spindles, windows, doors, sinks, finials, iron grates, etc. In addition to keeping pieces of our architectural history from the landfills, LAS is a resource for contractors and homeowners wishing to preserve their historic homes, artists, crafters and bargain hunters. Volunteers are needed for these and other projects.
