AmeriCorps*VISTA

Helping Others Help Themselves

AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) provides full-time members to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies to create and expand programs that ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. Through AmeriCorps*VISTA, ordinary people provide extraordinary service in more than 1,200 projects nationwide.

How AmeriCorps*VISTA Work AmeriCorps*VISTA members leverage human, financial, and material resources to increase the capacity of low-income communities across the country to solve their own problems.

When VISTA members complete their service, they leave behind lasting solutions to some of our country's toughest problems.

Since 1965, more than 140,000 Americans served through VISTA. Today, nearly 6,000 AmeriCorps*VISTA members serve throughout the country--working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities, bridge the digital divide, and strengthen the capacity of community organizations..

Who Can Apply to become an AmeriCorps*VISTA sponsor?

1 Public, private, community or faith-based nonprofit organizations

2 Local, state, or federal agencies

AmeriCorps*VISTA members spend at least one year in full-time service addressing the needs of low-income communities. All projects focus on building permanent infrastructure in nonprofit organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

4-H After-school Defined

4-H After-school is a focused priority within the 4-H Youth Development Program that helps 4-H and other youth serving organizations create and improve after-school programs in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the U.S. 4-H After-school is one of the various delivery methods through which 4-H programming is implemented, bringing community-based organizations access to the considerable resources of 4-H and the Cooperative Extension System of land-grant universities and USDA.

The primary goals of 4 H After-school are to :

à Provide high quality youth development training to after-school program staff.

à Make hands-on curricula available to youth in after-school programs.

à Organize 4-H Clubs in after-school programs.

These goals are accomplished by increasing the capacity of 4-H professionals to work in after-school programs and to strengthen collaborations with other youth-serving organizations, thereby increasing the quality and availability of after-school programs in America's communities. 4-H

After-school is defined as

Programs that are:

à Offered during the times children and youth are not in school and their parents are in need of safe, healthy, caring, and enriching environments for their children (including before- and after-school hours, teacher workdays, school holidays, summer months, and in some cases weekends).

à Designed for children and youth from kindergarten to twelfth grades.

à Designed to engage children and youth in long-term, structured, and sequentially planned learning experiences in partnerships with adults.

à Designed on principles of youth development to address the interests of children and youth and their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs.

By offering after-school program high quality training and resources 4-H After-school ensures safe, nurturing, and enriching learning environments for youth to grow and learn, thereby reaching their full potential.

4-H After-school works with urban, suburban and rural communities to identify their areas of need and interest and then build customized programs to meet those needs.

The innovative "learn-by-doing" curricula 4-H offers cover an impressive array of topics, including, Citizenship and Civic Education, Communication and Expressive Arts, Consumer and Family Science, Environmental Education and Earth Science, Healthy Lifestyle Education, Personal Development and Leadership, Plants and Animals, Science and Technology
These research-based, ready-to-use curricula set 4-H After-school apart and help young people to achieve social, emotional, physical, and academic success. Each curriculum provides youth with valuable skills such as leadership, collaboration, decision-making, civic responsibility, and critical thinking.

4-H After-school provides training and technical assistance to help youth development organizations at the local, state, and national levels.
Topics include Understanding Child Growth and Development, Experiential Learning, Guidance and Discipline, Ages and Stages of Development, Health and Nutrition, Working with Special Needs Audiences, Managing Multi-Age Groups, Working with Parents and the Community.

At least seven million and as many as 15 million "latchkey children" return to an empty house on any given afternoon (U.S. Census Bureau, Urban Institute estimates, 2000).

83% of the respondents feel safe from bullying - always to most of the time

81% responded that adults get to know young people - most of the time or always

72% reported that youth feel likely they can be themselves - always or most of the time

72% of respondents felt the activities were challenging - most of the time to always.

4-H After-school program growth is made possible through a generous grant from the JCPenney After-school Fund.

4-H After-school also partners with YMCA, Junior Achievement and Boys and Girls Clubs of America to increase the availability of after-school programs to an even greater number of children.

Description

Payette County Plan for After-school Program.

Goal 1: Introduce 4-H Curricula in to the Public Schools of Payette County.

How are we going to do this?

By sharing 4-H Curricula with teachers/Introduce new program ideas to participants.

By going in to the schools and doing presentations to the teacher of what 4-HAfter-School has to offer in terms of Curricula and Resources available to the Schools.

Using the Curricula to tie in with what the teachers are teaching.

By being involved with what the Schools are teaching and figuring out where else we can incorporate 4-H Curricula.

Also /providing hand-on activities. Such as the Junior Master Gardeners which teaches how important the land is to our whole eco-system through simple lessons that show and tell how important it is that we take care of the land.

Also /providing hand-on activities. For the children to learn arts and crafts that tie in with the lesson they have just learned.

And using Community "Tool Box's" that teachers or 4-h leaders can check out of the Extension Office to use within their classrooms/clubs .

Goal 2: Develop Out of School Day Camps

How are we going to do this?

By developing and planning Activities for Day Camps and Collaborate with surrounding counties (i.e. Washington County) and Public Schools to coordinate Day Camps. For when school's are on Holiday breaks/Summer vacations so the can learn new life skills and be creative and just have fun.

Currently Idaho 4-H After-school programs are conducted in 16 counties. Twelve 21 st Century Learning Center are working 8 county 4-H programs. Thirty-two school districts are working with 14 counties. The counties are providing after-school enrichment activities, staff training, and curricula projects. As of September 2005, 3150 youth have been reached through after-school programming efforts. Idaho 4-H continues to be fully engaged with the University of Idaho K-12 Outreach Committee. Staff member continue to update posting of 4-H programs on the UI website under Outreach. Idaho 4-H also hosted a Youth Development Institute in March 2005. It was attended by 4-H personnel, community partners from other youth agencies, and school teachers. The Youth Development Institute was offered for academic credit to help prepare more youth development professionals.
