Mission Statement
It is the mission of Literacy Volunteers of America-Steuben County to empower adult learners to achieve greater self-sufficiency, personal satisfaction, and self-esteem through improved reading, writing, and life literacy skills. Achievement of learners' self-determined goals leads to greater success in the areas of employment, parenting, and community involvement. Instruction will be provided at no cost by trained volunteer tutors.
Description
LVA-SC is a nationally accredited program that provides one-to-one instruction in Basic Reading and for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). LVA-SC offers services to Steuben County adults 16 or older who are out of school and read below a high school level. LVA-SC's trained volunteer tutors utilize a learner-centered approach in which learners actively determine the focues of their study. Achievement of Learners' self-determined goals helps learners to find jobs or earn higher wages, participate in children's learning, read letters, directions, and schedules, get a driver's permit or license, and complete applications. LVA-SC is committed to empowering learners to achieve greater self-sufficiency, personal satisfaction, and self-esteem through improved reading, writing, conversational, and life literacy skills. An accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, LVA-SC is supported by funds from the United Way of the Southern Tier, Inc. , the NYS Department of Education, corporate and foundation grants, and private donations.
