Mission Statement

The mission of the Network for a Healthy California - Bay Area Region is to forge creative partnerships that enable low-income Californians to embrace healthy eating and daily physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The Network is also dedicated to promoting food security for low-income communities through resources such as federal nutrition assistance programs, especially Food Stamps.

Description

The Network for a Healthy California - Bay Area Region is seeking high-school aged youth, college students and other individuals who are interested in working alongside professionals in the fields of nutrition and physical activity to be Champions for Change Volunteers in our fight for the health of low-income Bay Area residents.

The Network is a statewide effort of the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section (CPNS) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture. Through nutrition education and physical activity programming, community partnerships and a powerful regional collaborative, the Bay Area Region Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative (BANPAC), the Network uses its collective expertise to help low-income individuals in the Bay Area learn about and embrace healthy eating and daily physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Individuals may choose to volunteer with any of the following Campaigns and Programs, work with the collaborative or assist with physical activity integration:

African American Campaign This Campaign seeks to empower food-stamp eligible African American adult women, ages 18-54 and their families. The Campaign is seeking individuals who can help provide outreach at festivals, grocery stores and other community events.

Children's Power Play! Campaign The Power Play Campaign aims to motivate and empower 9 to 11 year old children. This campaign reaches out to children through a variety of activities at schools, community youth organizations, farmers' markets, grocery stores and other organizations. Volunteers are needed to help with youth activities at large community events.

Latino Campaign This campaign works to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic diseases within the Latino community. Volunteers are needed to assist with outreach at community events, including events at grocery stores, farmer's markets, and cultural festivals.

Worksite Program This program partners with and supports low-income worksites throughout the Bay Area in the development, implementation, and evaluation of their own worksite wellness program. Volunteers are needed to facilitate health promotion efforts at worksites.

Physical Activity Integration We recognize that nutrition and physical activity are the dynamic duo for better health. Volunteers with a background in fitness are needed to help provide physical activity demonstrations of all types for all low-income populations on an ongoing basis.

Bay Area Nutrition and Physical Activity Collaborative (BANPAC) Throughout the year, our collaborative brings together a wide array to community partners at informational and educational conferences. Volunteers are needed to help support the Collaborative's initiatives.
