Mission Statement

The mission of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America.

Description

Since its founding in 1988, the Tenement Museum has striven to portray an often misunderstood group in American history - the millions of immigrants who arrived here in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Museum offers tours of its 1863 tenement building to almost 140,000 visitors per year. Inside the building, apartments have been renovated to specific time periods, and Museum educators tell the stories of real families who lived there. By talking about immigrants of the past, the Museum hopes visitors will also reflect upon experiences of immigrants today.
