Mission Statement

Our mission is twofold. First, we enforce the federal Fair Housing Act in the central Alabama region, which covers 29 counties. We stand ready to assist in investigating credible complaints, filing administrative complaints with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or in federal court, challenging discriminatory housing laws at the state and local level, and mediating disputes. CAFHC's testing program provides valuable, objective evidence of discrimination. Additionally, CAFHC recruits and trains attorneys throughout the region to bring civil lawsuits against housing providers when other efforts to end discriminatory practices fail. Second, we seek to to promote understanding of the Fair Housing Act. CAFHC's educational activities include speaking to community groups and individuals most likely to experience discrimination, and maintaining a strong working relationship with housing professionals and other community groups. We believe that understanding the Fair Housing Act is the key to compliance.

Description

As mentioned in our mission statement, we respond to complaints from individuals and groups in the central Alabama region about housing discrimination by investigating and testing to verify the discrimination, and if we can verify the complaint, we bring administrative or judicial actions against the party engaging in discrimination. We also work with other organizations in a variety of coalitions to promote anti-discirmination efforts and greater tolerance. And we engage in a variety of education, training, and outreach efforts to raise awareness about our organization's activities and the breadth and substance of the federal Fair Housing Act.
