Mission Statement

Across the country The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides an array of medical services, support services, and assistance with medical equipment to people with one of the 43 neuromuscular diseases covered in the MDA program. MDA supports research worldwide on the causes of, cures and treatments for neuromuscular disorders. MDA also supports educational programs on neuromuscular disease for the public and medical professionals. MDA's programs, research, and services are funded almost entirely by the voluntary contributions of concerned individuals and cooperating organizations.

Description

Locally, the East King County Chapter of MDA supports clinics at Children's Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center, where diagnostic and follow up care from specialists in neuromuscular disease is provided. In conjunction with this medical care, MDA locally provides many other direct services, including assistance with the purchase of and repair of wheelchairs, leg braces, and communication devices, as well as two support groups, and a summer camp for youth with neuromuscular disorders. The University of Washington is one of MDA's major research centers with several researchers currently working on groundbreaking studies into the causes of, and cures and treatments for, neuromuscular diseases. All of this is made possible through contributions from people and organizations throughout Northwest Washington.
