Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Human Development is to promote health and well-being in individuals, families, and communities. Our vision commits us to preventing substance abuse, developing youth as leaders, helping people stay physically and emotionally healthy, and helping parents improve their parenting skills. We build programs that reflect these commitments. We value people of diverse backgrounds and experiences. We believe in, and use, the power of volunteers and peers to empower others. We believe in, and use, the group process and teamwork as foundations for how we work in our own organization and in the programs we develop.

Description

The San Francisco office of the Center for Human Development has been operating since 1980, providing community support to "at-risk" youth. Using the peer support and group facilitation model--the cornerstone of the Center for Human Development's philosophy--the San Francisco Office partners students and community members with youth at the County Community Schools and Log Cabin Detention Facility, in the capacity of mentors and group facilitators. Our programs enable youth to make positive decisions for an overall healthy lifestyle.

Peer support and group facilitation models encourage dialogue and understanding about the issues involved in negative decision making, especially around drugs, alcohol, and violence. Youth discuss issues such as self-esteem, goal-setting, anger management and decision making in safe settings; this permits self-reflection and a greater awareness of risks they face, as well as their own abilities to surmount them.
