Mission Statement

Fútbol Más is an NGO (in Chile, Haíti, Ecuador and Perú) who´s mission it is to help vulnerable neighbourhoods in Latin America and the Caribbean become happier. The means by which we try to fulfill our mission is to help children in these neighbourhoods develop and enhance their resilience to situations of hardship in the(ir) world. We do this by giving social-football classes in the neighbourhoods where these (3900+) kids live.

Description

The problem that resulted in the idea to establishing Fútbol Más was defined by the establishers as a lack of both institutional as well as societal focus on the rights and needs of children. Although this problem is one of societal width, it is especially problematic in vulnerable neighbourhoods. These are segregated neighbourhoods with low access to the city´s benefits and often are stigmatized for delinquency, violence, drug-trafficking, and more. Because of this, the boys, girls and young adolescents grow up and develop in an environment of few opportunities. This especially counts for girls and young women, since the culture in this environment is one where the masculine ways rule, and female equality is scarcely promoted. One of the problems of this all is that these boys and girls often end up getting in contact with their first acquaintance with law: Criminal Law, and ending up in a vicious circle of crime and punishment.

Our project aims at social inclusion of all inhabitants of a neighbourhood to create a resilience-enabling environment for girls, boys and adolescents. We: (a physical trainer and a psychologist) aim to be a tutors of resilience together with alumni, give training in positive parenting, include actors from the neighbourhood and parents in decision-making, and we aim at improving the social capital in neighbourhoods. All these actions are built around 75 minutes of socio-sportive soccer classes, two times a week, for each of the four categories of the participating children. Five times a year, we -together with the neighbourhoods- organize a league between two neighbourhoods where the children can demonstrate the lessons they learned, and enjoy this long awaited day.
