Mission Statement

The purpose of the Friends of the Tuscobia Trail, Inc. is to protect, preserve, restore and manage native ecosystems of the Tuscobia Trail; to educate and provide service programs and special events; to promote development and resources and to procure financial support for these activities.

We accomplish the preservation and protection of native ecosystems by staying abreast of trends and concerns of users, landowners and outdoor enthusiasts along the trail. When a problem is detected, we investigate it and together with the Wisconsin DNR, local municipalities, landowners or individuals, try to create a solution.

Individuals taking their motorized vehicles off of the trail onto adjacent landowners land is an example. This practice often leads to the creation of terrain damage and subsequent vulnerability to erosion and possibly the degradation of the quality of adjacent waterways.

In addressing this particular problem, we try to stay active along the trail, write grants to help us increase our presence along the trail and engage in projects that involve the cooperation of a number of groups simultaneously. When more groups are involved, problems are more easily addressed.

Right now, one of our development projects is to refurbish the Winter Railroad Depot into a Chamber of Commerce Welcoming Center, a Tuscobia Trail trail-head, offices for the Friends group and a facility that will house a historic display of early logging, railroading and settling activity.

When complete, the strategic location of this facility along the trail will help us to be in touch with and interact with trail users to persuade them to engage in ethical trail use. At the same time, we hope to also positively impact community development and the patronage of area businesses with this project.
