Mission Statement

Umoja Student Development Corporation (Umoja) demonstrates a best practice model of youth development and education by partnering with students in their growth as learners and leaders and by actively engaging them in academic achievement, community building, and leadership opportunities. We accomplish this by implementing innovative educational initiatives and cultivating relationships with schools and organizations on the West Side and throughout Chicago . Umoja envisions a relationship-rich environment where schools, families, and communities work as partners to foster confident and motivated young people who understand and achieve their educational and career goals and act as agents of change.

Description

Umoja Student Development Corporation was founded in 1997 and is a not for profit organization that partners with under-resourced Chicago Public High Schools. With our offices located inside our partner high schools, Umoja is able to offer intensive supports to young people by providing academic, leadership and college preparation programs. Umoja begins working with students in their freshman year and continues to work with them beyond high school and even college graduation. With support from volunteers like you, Umoja provides programs and opportunities that will ultimately help students graduate from high school, prepared to be successful citizens who are positive assets to their communities and society. In the 10 years since Umoja was founded, the college enrollment rate at Manley High School has increased from less than 10% in 1997 to 68% for the Class of 2008 as they enrolled in colleges and universities across the country.
