Mission Statement

The mission of the Adult Literacy Council is to promote public awareness of the need for literacy education in Clarksville and Montgomery County, to recruit students who are under-educated in basic ready, computation skills, and/or English as a second language, and to recruit and train volunteer tutors interested in teaching adults with low reading and computation skills. The Literacy Council works to match volunteer tutors with adult students to increase their literacy skills.

Description

The Council is primarily funded by the United Way of Greater Clarksville Region. It consists of 2 part time staff, a Director and an office Assistant. It is governed by a board of 15 members of the community that volunteer their time. The Council provides tutor training and materials for tutors to use with adult students. Tutoring is provided through one-on-one sessions with tutors and students. The Council also supports the Adult Basic Education program and provides support with tutors in the adult education classrooms.
