Mission Statement

NFI promotes collaborative, sustainable cultivation of food in urban spaces.

We work to increase opportunities for metro DC residents to grow healthy food for themselves and their communities, and to participate in the diverse, local communities that thrive in shared urban gardening spaces.

Description

Our urban organic vegetable garden is a place of learning and community gathering where our students and volunteers receive instruction in food gardening and learn from each other!

Produce grown in our garden is donated to local food pantries.

Our programs focus on:

  • introducing urban residents to food growing
  • skill-building for food gardening success using sustainable practices
  • community building through gardening
  • linking the community garden movement to broader urban food systems

I went out to the farm with little to no gardening/farming experience so, I was a little intimidated. I was met by Caroline, the volunteer coordinator (?), who was incredibly helpful and super friendly. She quickly showed me the ropes and I was weeding and planting in no time! I will certainly recommend this experience to friends and I intend to return on a weekly basis.
