Mission Statement

Kids on the Block of San Diego is committed to providing educational puppet programs which enlighten children on the issues of disability awareness, medical, physical and educational differences and social concerns.

Kids on the Block of San Diego is an educational program that uses life-sized puppets to represent children with a variety of physical and learning disabilities, medical conditions and social problems. The puppets, who travel throughout the San Diego community performing at schools and special programs, address a wide range of issues that affect today¹s children. They speak out about what it¹s like to have a disability or have other cultural and social challenges.

The interaction between children and the puppets reinforces the unique and often humorous exchange of facts and feelings that is the essence of each performance. Kids on the Block reaches thousands of children annually in elementary schools and community programs throughout San Diego County. Since its inception in 1985, over 900,000 children in our community have had the opportunity to hear Kids on the Block¹s positive message.

Issues include: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Prevention, Autism, Bullying and School Safety, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Healthy Eating/ Healthy Lifestyles, Hearing Impairment, Hemophilia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health for Children, Teaching Tolerance and Multiculturalism, Physical Disabilities, Spina Bifida, and Visual Impairment.

Kids On The Block changes perspective and the lives of the San Diego County children. Every year the impact to the school age children in under-served communities is in the thousands. I love being part of the education on sensitive topics for the improvement of our views on cultural differences, diversity, healthy lives, abuse awareness, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, autism, adhd, hearing impairment, and many topics that need our attention. And they do this in a the most positive and enjoyable way...with puppets!
