Description

Southwinds Inc. is a non-profit organization located in the South Hills area of Allegheny County that provides community living arrangements for adults that are intellectually and developmentally disabled. In 1983, a group of parents with mentally retarded children formed a group to discuss what was in the best interest of their child when both the child and the parent got older and the parent could no longer care for the child. Each parent wanted their child to continue to live in a safe and caring environment in the community they grew up in. They did not want their child to end up in an institution, so it was determined that group homes in regular communities were the ideal location for their children. This was a big undertaking that brought about big results for adults with mental retardation. So in 1983 Southwinds was founded and opened its first group home with three individuals. From humble beginnings to today where we have 52 individuals living in 14 group homes! The leaps and bounds that Southwinds has taken over the years would not be possible without the vision of a group of parents that wanted nothing but the best for their children.
