Support White Pony Express by unloading and assorting a wide variety of food for distribution to our various partners combating hunger and homelessness across Contra Costa County! Sign up your team to volunteer: http://whiteponyexpress.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=41400 Starting as an unfunded, grassroots effort by local residents, White Pony Express has developed into one of the largest Food Rescue and delivery program in Northern California in its five years of operation. To date we have delivered over 8 MILLION pounds of nutritious, fresh food that would otherwise have gone to waste. WPE’s mission is to help end hunger and poverty in Contra Costa County by delivering the abundance all around us to those in need. Operating 7 days a week, 364 days per year, our Food Rescue program rescues on average of 6000+ lbs per day of high-quality, largely perishable, surplus food from local grocers, retailers, farmers markets, restaurants, catering companies, test kitchens, and wholesalers. This abundance is then sorted and lovingly delivered by our team of volunteers and staff in refrigerated vehicles the same day to dozens of organizations serving those in need. We deliver to the entire span of Contra Costa County, from the far eastern cities to the far western cities and every community in between. The Food Rescue recipient organizations serve many different populations from shelters and residential facilities, to churches, schools, and community kitchens. There is never any charge or fee to anyone receiving what we bring to our partner organizations from any of White Pony Express’ programs. Volunteer Drivers As a Volunteer Food Rescue runner, you will serve as a driver or navigator. This volunteer opportunity requires all drivers to have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a good driving record. In addition, each runner candidate will be required to attend a driver orientation, review Food Rescue’s policy document and acknowledge they have read the provided driver handbook, and read and signed the Driver Safety Agreement. You will begin as a Navigator, and the Driver will explain the job as you do a run with them. As a WPE Food Rescue driver, you will be representing our organization as you travel throughout the county and interacting with our donors, recipients, and clients - everyone you come into contact with either directly or indirectly. It is critical that you look your best because as people see you, they see WPE. Standard WPE attire for driving runs includes wearing clean clothes and a clean WPE "apron-bib" and hat, worn and tied appropriately. This attire allows recipients to clearly identify you as a WPE representative and also conveys you are thoughtful about appearance. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Driver, contact the Volunteer Coordinator for details. Email Mandy Nakaya, Mandy@whiteponyexpress.org.
