WPE’s food rescue program has expanded this model, subjecting all collected food to a meticulous culling process and promising the rescued food is obtained, sorted, and redistributed within 24 hours-seven days a week. Our mission is to eliminate hunger and poverty by delivering the abundance to those in need-with love. A volunteer-powered 501(c)(3) organization, we serve 125,000 people each year through more than 90 nonprofit recipients. Since our inception, WPE has rescued and delivered more than 26 million pounds of nutritious food-equal to 22 million meals-which prevented more than 31,000 tons of CO2 emissions from entering the air we breathe.

Through the Food Rescue Hero Initiative, WPE has initiated an innovative collection and distribution system for smaller, more frequent donations. Using the White Pony Express Food Rescue App (think Uber for food recovery), food donors can signal when they have excess food and an available food runner volunteer will pick up and deliver it directly to a nonprofit organization that feeds the hungry. Download and information here: https://www.whiteponyexpress.org/food-rescue-hero-initiative Volunteers using the app will receive a ping when a local food donor has excess food. Available volunteers can claim the run and will receive detailed directions and other important information. In less than an hour, you can prevent perfectly good food from going to landfill and provide food security for our most vulnerable neighbors! HEAR HOW EASY IT IS FROM A HERO: "This app makes doing food rescue's fun! It is painful to see how much perfectly good food goes to waste and it's amazing to be able to get this food to those in need around you with this app."

Volunteer Drivers As a Volunteer Food Rescue runner, you will serve as a driver or navigator. This volunteer opportunity requires all drivers to have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a good driving record. In addition, each runner candidate will be required to attend a driver orientation, review Food Rescue’s policy document and acknowledge they have read the provided driver handbook, and read and signed the Driver Safety Agreement. You will begin as a Navigator, and the Driver will explain the job as you do a run with them. As a WPE Food Rescue driver, you will be representing our organization as you travel throughout the county and interacting with our donors, recipients, and clients - everyone you come into contact with either directly or indirectly. It is critical that you look your best because as people see you, they see WPE. Standard WPE attire for driving runs includes wearing clean clothes and a clean WPE "apron-bib" and hat, worn and tied appropriately. This attire allows recipients to clearly identify you as a WPE representative and also conveys you are thoughtful about appearance. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Driver, contact the Volunteer Coordinator for details. Email Mandy Nakaya, Mandy@whiteponyexpress.org.
