Ihsca Charter High School

Mission Statement

Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA) was founded in 2010 as the first public charter high school in Chicago dedicated entirely to preparing young people for meaningful careers in the health sciences. IHSCA’s goals are to prepare urban youth to: 1) succeed in competitive colleges and universities, 2) obtain job-readiness certification for entry-level positions with higher wages in healthcare, and 3) gain new awareness and seek a healthier lifestyle.

Description

IHSCA students participate in an extended school day and graduate with a total of 32 credits - a full 33% more than are required for graduation in Chicago. To ensure high quality instruction, the pre-college curriculum is aligned with College Readiness Standards while the career pathway in health is aligned with the National Health Sciences Curriculum. Under this career pathway paradigm, students earn industry-recognized credentials in the fields of therapeutics/diagnostics, health informatics and biotechnology research and development. All students (whether native or non-native speakers) also develop verbal and written proficiency in Spanish through four years of intensive language classes.
