Mission Statement

Crawford Stewardship Project works to protect the environment of Crawford County and neighboring regions from threats of polluting and extractive industries, to promote sustainable land use, environmental justice, and local control of natural resources.

Description

Vision
Empowered communities in sustainable relationship with thriving ecosystems

Goals
Community education and empowerment.
Protecting and actively practicing democracy and local control.
Protecting and improving our ecosystems and natural resources.

Protecting the natural resources and beauty of an area takes educated and engaged citizens. We are dedicated to empowering the people of Crawford County and our neighbors throughout the Driftless region and our state to rise up to embrace sustainable opportunities and meet the challenges of unsustainable rural development. Though we do reach out, and in fact have been instrumental in forming statewide and regional coalitions on frac sand mining and farm industrialization and consolidation, we focus mainly on the most local and democratic levels of government. It is there that we are able to be the most effective and generally avoid partisan breakdowns in communication. We go to the flashpoints of environmental injustices and work to bring forward the voices of those most affected, helping neighbors organize themselves and providing help to build their capacities.
Crawford Stewardship Project is composed of two Co-coordinators, an active four-person board, and a small army of dedicated volunteers who help us out in innumerable ways.
