Mission Statement

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that works to increase the amount of creative work -- cultural, educational, and scientific content -- available to the general public for free and legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing. Creative Commons' mission is to provide an easy-to-use legal infrastructure that gives everyone from individual "user generated content" creators to major companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to pre-clear usage rights to work they own the copyright to.

Description

Our signature project is the Creative Commons copyright license suite started in 2002. CC licenses let people easily change their copyright terms from the default of "all rights reserved" to "some rights reserved." Collectively, CC-licensed creative work makes up a large body of content that can be freely and legally used by anyone in the world, as long as certain guidelines are followed. There are many millions of creative works that have been published under the terms of our copyright licenses.

Creative Commons is headquartered in San Francisco, California and has an office in Berlin, Germany. CC works with volunteers around the world who "port" our licenses to different copyright legislations. The porting process involves both linguistically translating the licenses and legally adapting them to particular jurisdictions. Currently, CC licenses have been adapted for 41 legal jurisdictions around the world.
