The mission of Kansas City Community Gardens is to assist low-income households and community groups in the Kansas City metropolitan area to produce vegetables and fruit from garden plots located in backyards, vacant lots, and at community sites.
Imagine a city with community gardens thriving and orchards sprouting fresh food in every neighborhood. A rooftop garden in a senior housing community....a local faith-based nonprofit transforming an empty lot into a productive community garden...a community orchard where neighborhood volunteers care for the trees and harvest fresh fruit year after year for themselves and to donate.
At Kansas City Community Gardens (KCCG), knowledgeable gardeners on staff are already working side-by-side with community volunteers to achieve this vision for Kansas City. In fact, KCCG has been working to help build, plant, and grow community gardens for 35 years. KCCG began in 1979 as the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry’s "Community Garden Project," an initiative started to help low-income families save money on grocery bills. In 1985, the organization became incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The community gardens and orchards thriving in our city are real, and they are growing fresh food everywhere in Kansas City.
