Mission Statement

The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation encourages and inspires action for peace and justice.

To perpetuate the work and spirit of Vincent L. Hawkinson, the Foundation:

  • Honors individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to peace and justice,
  • Awards scholarships to students who have demonstrated a deep commitment to peace and justice, and
  • Publicizes the activities of honorees and scholarship recipients so that others are encouraged and inspired to action for peace and justice.

Founded in 1988, the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation suppports the next generation of peace and justice leaders by awarding scholarships, and honors seasoned peace and justice leaders.

We recognize and support individuals, young and old, with a passion for peace and justice. We are unique in that we both honor individuals who have made a lifetime commitment to peace and justice and support students who are in the early years of their commitment to peace and justice. We are committed to being an organization that embraces the variety of methods that one can take to work towards peace and justice in our world. We support individuals of all faiths and backgrounds.

The Hawkinson Foundation defines peace and justice broadly. Past scholarship recipients have worked on international healthcare, LGBT equality, Native American rights, domestic violence, human rights, and health disparities in low-income communities.

We take inspiration from the Rev. Vincent Hawkinson’s commitment to stand up and speak against oppression and injustices in all forms.

The Hawkinson Foundation is one of the only peace and justice organizations in the U.S. that combines both an honorary award and scholarship program.

Since its beginning, the Foundation has honored 46 veteran peacemakers and awarded scholarships to 127 students.
