At Futurewise we work to make cities great places to live while discouraging encroachment into the countryside. We help communities make well designed land use decisions for a healthy and convenient future at the city, county, state levels.
In 2008 we are focusing our efforts in four priority areas: working to reduce global warming by promoting smart growth; continuing our community protection campaign; launching an expanded urban development program; and working to protect farmland and keep working lands working.
Achieving smart growth goals and reducing sprawl are absolutely essential to reducing global warming pollutiion. Our growth management laws determine where we build and what transportation options are available. It is not possible to achieve adequate carbon dioxide reduction goals without strengthening growth management-especially in our state where transportation is the leading source of global warming pollution.
Through our communtiy protection campaign we protected this summer we protected over 100,000 acres from the affects of sprawl. Our work will continue in 22 counties throught the state including Spokane as they revisit their comprehensive plans, shoreline master plans, and critical areas ordinances.
Our urban development program is working to make cities more attractive, sustainable places to live. We are organizing a proactive agenda improving transportation choices, supporting infill development, tracking affordability problems, and protecting open space.
We will continue to work to protect farmland and keep farms in production. Futurewise protects more farmland than any other organization in Washington. Our advocacy and legal programs are tackling local, state and federal decisions to achieve two goals: to save farms from irresponsible develpment and to help make farming more economically viable.
