Mission Statement

Mae West produces new work by living playwrights in both standard run and festival format. We annually award $1,000 to a playwright who best fulfills the Female Protagonist Project. In efforts to reach audiences throughout our city, our festival has been presented in several distinct Seattle neighborhoods. We have expanded our reach to include film and visual art presentations, as well as the publication of anthologies.

Description

What makes Mae West Fest unique is that we put women in as many positions of creative power as possible - from the producer to the playwright to the technicians. Our goal is to empower creative women to step up and forward into these roles by giving them the experiences they need to move forward into responsible positions on their own. Based in Seattle, WA, we accept and produce scripts from all over the world, but remain committed to approximately 75% of our work coming directly from artists in the Pacific Northwest. We encourage the development of new work by providing public readings and workshops with professional actors/resses. We also offer classes, panels, workshops, and training; strengthening the female voice in all realms of theater and performance.
