The mission of Kids Connection is to teach inner city kids from Redlands and the surrounding communities simple life skills at no cost.

Vision Statement

Connecting the community in sharing; lessons learned, talents and abilities and professional expertise in building strong foundations for the next generation of productive and successful contributors to society.

Description

Kids Connection offers two interactive programs: Kids Connection 360 for children from Kindergarten through 5 th grade and Jr. High Connection 180 for children from 6 th grade through 8 th grade.

Kids Connection 360

Kids Connection 360 is meeting the growing needs of children from Kindergarten through 5 th grade in Redlands, Mentone and the surrounding communities. In our program, we teach children about the importance of knowing their surrounding community; family, extended family, friends, neighbors and those they come in contact with at school. Our focus is how each child can impact lives around them through respect, integrity, kindness and selfless acts.

We desire to see lives changed through applying simple life principles; such as, putting other people’s needs first, how can I help those around me and it’s not always about me. The methods we use to achieve our goals for this program are:

  • Skits & Dramas: Skits and dramas have a strong relational and interactive piece in them, which adds to the power of the scripts. As children connect with both puppets and peers, they won’t just think about the topic, they will feel the subject matter.

  • Object Lessons: The purpose of object lessons is to show the affect of our influence upon others

  • Video Presentations: Videos play an important part of today’s teaching methods. This technology can influence children in positive ways.

  • Arts & Crafts: Arts and crafts will be used not only for fun and self-expression but also for teaching unique coping skills for the difficulties of life; for example, worries and grief.

  • Team Games & Activities: Designed to create dynamic and supportive play environments, noncompetitive games and activities encourage participants to gain as much as they contribute.

  • Music: Music lessons are designed to give teachers and leaders, with no formal music training, all the tools they need to help their students develop an understanding and appreciation for music.

Jr. High Connection 180

Jr. High Connection 180 is for children from 6 th grade through 8 th grade. Middle school students are at a crucial stage of life. We recognize the importance of teaching these children the value of being a team member and to remember when they make mistakes they can rely on each other and the people involved in their life to help them redirect their choices for success.

Teaching life skills such as respect, reliability and responsibility, can greatly impact the lives of middle school students while promoting academic excellence. Educational access for youth in under-resourced communities requires addressing the unique cultural, social and psychological variables that can negatively impact educational attainment. Jr High Connection 180 is a program designed to address these variables and take a community approach to building a college-going culture in middle schools of Redlands, Mentone and surrounding communities. Jr High Connection 180 promotes the development of a strong self-efficacy, positive self-concept, goal-setting and an understanding of higher education at an early stage of a students' educational experience. The methods we use to achieve our goals for this program are:

  • Team Building Activities: Designed to help groups develop effective communication & problem-solving skills.

  • Group Mentoring: One-on-one mentoring is important for students. But, group mentoring by a senior leader or community leader is another opportunity for team building. Students learn new skills and approaches while furthering their relationships with each other.

  • Multimedia Learning: Improving student attitudes toward projects and their critical thinking skills.
