Mission Statement

The Rainbow Community Center of Contra Costa County builds community and promotes well-being among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) people and our allies.

Description

The Rainbow Community Center is the only organization in Contra Costa County that is solely focused on serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community; our current priorities are to build services for LGBT youth, seniors, people living with HIV/AIDS and to develop community building efforts that will diminish the sense of isolation and promote greater acceptance of all LGBTQ people.

Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive and respectful environment for LGBTQ people of all ages, socio-economic status, races, cultures and religions. We strive to create services and activities that will promote the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of our community by providing professional services, peer support, referral services, social opportunities and educational programs of interest to our community as well as to the community at large.

I've had the pleasure of volunteering time with Everything Under the Rainbow (a community thrift store supporting the Rainbow Community Center) for a few weeks now and chose this organization specifically for a few reasons. I shop at their thrift store, and the prices and selection are great. Aside from the fact that they're the only thrift store in downtown Concord, and just blocks from the BART, Everything Under the Rainbow directly supports RCC programming and outreach activities serving the LGBTQ community. RCC is only center serving LGBTQ youth, adults and families, in my community - making local volunteer support that much more important. Rachel, Ashleigh and the volunteer staff at the thrift store are really passionate about the work they do, I love volunteering in that kind of environment - it's what keeps me coming back! Fun fact: they're all really artistic too! I can't wait for the monthly 'Crafts Night' this month at the store!
