Mission Statement

The MAG Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness has worked with a diverse array of partners to develop regional solutions to end homelessness. Each year, the expertise of the Committee and community partners has resulted in more people being housed and supported in their quest for stability. Staffed by the Maricopa Association of Governments since 1999, the Continuum of Care has successfully competed well in the national application for funding. Over the years, the HUD funding award has increased and now supports more than 60 homeless assistance programs in 24 different agencies. This award has been an important and consistent source of funding for the community.

Description

The Point-in-Time homeless street count and shelter count is an effort to learn more about the individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County and the entire country. In order to accomplish local and federal goals toward ending homelessness, we first need to know who is experiencing homelessness, where they are, and better understand the factors surrounding their homelessness.

According to local data collected during the 2014 homeless count, 5,918 people had experienced homelessness in Maricopa County, with 1,053 of them reported to be sleeping on the streets and 4,865 people in shelters. Of the total people counted, 1,819 were children.

Efforts are underway to conduct the 2015 homeless count during the early morning hours of February 24, 2015. As in previous years, the 2015 homeless count is a one-night street and shelter count to determine the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County during a given point in time. The count includes a brief survey to collect information about people experiencing homelessness.
