Mission Statement

The mission of the Orange Giraffe Project (OGP) is to empower people living with cancer, and those touched by the cancer community, through the creative outlet of jewelry design. Through its events, the OGP also seeks to raise public awareness of the arts and wellness.

Description

The OGP is a small organization in New York City that partners with the Creative Center, Hope and Heroes, and the Museum of Art and Design to hold various jewelry design workshops. While one of the OGP’s guiding values is creativity, we believe that creating jewelry can specifically benefit those living with cancer.

Jewelry is a form of body adornment and an artform in which the body is an integral part of the final composition. Thus the creative process of making jewelry serves as a meaningful yet indirect way for a person living with cancer to reflect on his or her body changes.

Our volunteers consist of a team of talented jewelry designers who have gifted their time and skills. They work one-on-one with our participants in order to translate their personal inspirations into a piece of wearable art.

Beyond our flagship workshops, we also:

-hold jewelry making activities with pediatric oncology patients in waiting rooms and bedside

-participate in cancer walks

-create jewelry kits for hospitals

-invite artists to participate in a competition, submitting pieces of wearable art that touch on themes of beauty and healing
