Mission Statement

To improve the reading readiness skills of our kindergarten children so that they will have the foundation necessary to be ready for effective first grade performance.

Description

ColumbusReads is a tutoring and mentoring program for kindergarten children in 17 Columbus Public Schools. The children receive 30 minutes of individualized tutoring in reading readiness skills. The trained volunteer gives one hour per week to the program and works with two children individually for thirty minutes each.

Structured lessons that are planned by a certified teacher (site coordinator) are provided for the tutors to use each time they work with a child. The site coordinator oversees each tutoring session supporting the tutor and the child.

I was a Columbus Reads Volunteer through my previous employer. The children I tutored were awesome kids with some very large challenges ahead of them. For me, the best part of this volunteer experience was to watch a child that can barely recognize their alphabet at the beginning of a school year learn to not only identify the letters, but to read sentences and eventually an entire book as the year progressed. I was very fortunate to play a part in the life of a child.
