The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
The Leon County Humane Society is Tallahassee's largest no kill, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to saving Tallahassee's homeless pets by educating our community about responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation through programs like Spay/Neuter, Rescue Ride, and Friends Fur Life. Because we are a no-kill organization, we are also a "limited intake" shelter.
The Leon County Humane Society works closely with other animal welfare agencies in the community and transfers animals in from other shelters that euthanize for space, including the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Services Center (City Shelter). We do not take animals in from the public.
Once an animal is accepted in our foster and adoption program they are not euthanized for space reasons. Unless there are medical or behavioral issues that develop, deeming an animal un-adoptable, a cat or dog will stay in our adoption program until they find their forever home.
