Mission Statement
Suicide Prevention Action Network - Georgia, is a 501C(3) organization created in 2003 to reduce completed and attempted suicide in Georgia. Its focus is on creating public awareness and public/political will to provide resources to implement the Georgia State Suicide Prevention Plan. SPAN-GA empowers survivors of completed suicides, attempters of suicide, and supporters of suicide prevention to become actively involved in educating private and public citizens to the emotional and financial costs of suicide in Georgia. SPAN-GA succeeds SPAN USA, which moved to Washington D.C. in 2003.
Description
Most people are shocked to realize that there are more suicides than homicides in our state and throughout the nation, that every 16 minutes someone dies by suicide in our nation, that the numbers of attempts are staggering, that the numbers are increasing! We achieve our mission by promoting education, creating public awareness, and advocating in the legislature. We are the organization that was funded through the State of Georgia to develop the Georgia Suicide Prevention Plan, which we did by gathering all the major stakeholders in Georgia and together we created the plan. SPAN-GA was a leader in suicide prevention efforts and our plan became the template for many other states in this effort.
