About SMART Reading SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest-need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: one-on-one reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills and a love of reading. SMART Reading provides a meaningful way for Oregonians to make a direct impact in their communities. Join us! Site Coordinators are the leadership volunteers who are vital to the success of the SMART Reading program at a school site. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of both adult volunteers and students when they need the support more than ever. SMART Reading is not a tutoring program, and teaching experience isn't required. Helpful skills (not all required) include: public speaking, experience with kids and volunteers, records preservation, computer skills like using email and accessing webinars, and Spanish language fluency. This is a time committment of around 4 hours a week. Programs generally run mid-October through mid-May and can vary by school site. The reading session schedule will be finalized soon, and is anticipated to be an early morning weekday. Volunteer Readers read with one assigned child (One-to-One SMART) or to a classroom of students (Classroom SMART). This is a time commitment of around 1-2 hours per week. For either volunteer role, a SMART Reading background check, school district background check, and training will be required. Learn more about each role and complete an application at www.smartreading.com/volunteer to get started! If you have any questions, email RVteam@smartreading.org.
