Mission Statement

SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: one-on-one reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills and a love of reading. SMART Reading provides a meaningful way for Oregonians to make a direct impact in their communities.

Description

SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a nationally recognized, community-funded nonprofit that partners with a statewide network of educators, volunteers and advocates to help Oregon's children become confident readers and productive citizens.

SMART engages a diverse set of community volunteers to provide program support as Site Coordinators, SMART Team Members, Program Aides, and Readers. SMART also offers opportunitites to those who wish to act as SMART Ambassadors or Chapter Members to heighten awareness and fundraising.

SMART partners with hundreds of schools statewide to deliver proven literacy support to K-3 children. Teachers recommend students for participation in the program, which complements the school's curriculum.

The program typically operates during the school year between October and May. Whether you can volunteer 1 hour a week, 1 hour a day, or once during the year. Your donation of time can help reverse the statistic that 38% of Oregon's 4th graders read below the basic level.
