Mission Statement

KIPP DC is a network of high performing public charter schools aiming to prepare under-served students with the academic, intellectual and character skills necessary for success in high school, college, and the competitive world beyond. It is our mission to end the achievement gap for youth living in under-served communities in Washington, D.C.

Description

At KIPP DC, we believe that there are no shortcuts in life and that all students can learn regardless of their life circumstances or difficult backgrounds. KIPP DC students spend 40% more time in school than traditional students during extended school day, school week and school year time. Students attend school from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm during the week, four hours on Saturdays and 11 months of the year. KIPP DC students engage in 8 hours of instruction per day, including 1½ hours of math and reading and an hour of writing daily. Students also study science, history, Spanish, P.E., orchestra, computers and social studies.

KIPP DC strives to serve the most under-resourced communities in Washington, D.C. As a public charter school, KIPP DC offers open enrollment to any youth living within the boundaries of D.C., and our schools are completely tuition-free. We recruit heavily in the most under-resourced neighborhoods in D.C., and approximately 87% of our students reside in Wards 7 and 8. Currently, 99% percent of our students are African-American, and over 75% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 12% of our students have special education needs and only 6% of our students' parents have received a post-secondary degree.
