Mission Statement

Sierra Club-Spokane Inner City Outings (ICO), is a community based outreach program of the Sierra Club providing opportunities for urban youth and adults to explore, enjoy and protect the natural world. The goals of the Spokane ICO program are to promote appreciation for and protection of the natural environment through wilderness adventures and environmental education, and to create opportunities for personal growth and development by linking participants from different cultures, foster respect of self and others, and provide participants with outdoor skills training and leadership opportunities.

Description

Spokane Inner City Outings began as part of the Upper Columbia River Group of the Sierra Club in June of 2006. Local Sierra Club members recognized the need for the program in teh Spokane community. The first ICO program was established in 1971 by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Sierra Club. There are now approximately 50 ICO programs nationwide serving thousands of participants every year. Spokane ICO operates as an all volunteer organization in cooperation with local agencies. We are currently working with to serve youth in the West Central neighborhood of Spokane and the West Valley area of Spokane Valley. ICO leaders/volunteers are certified and trained in recreational outdoor and safety skills as well as environmental education and working with youth. To introduce youth to the natural world, Spokane ICO volunteers donate their time to community agencies that want to provide outings programs for their members. The agencies are hand selected based on specific criteria and currently include a community center, a community mission, and a school district.
