The Asthma Health Literacy Project aims to train community volunteers/interns to teach health literacy and give parents the tools to help manage their children's asthma. The overall goal is to improve conditions of asthma and health literacy rates in the South Bronx by community involvement and raising awareness.
Interns will receive training from the Literacy Assistance Center and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center to prepare them for their job. Once trained, interns will provide one-on-one training to parents and caregivers in the waiting rooms of the ER, inpatient unit, and asthma clinics. The training should help the recipients to better manage their children's asthma, but they should also leave the sessions better able to navigate the health care system and participate in their own care (e.g., by knowing what questions to ask their doctors). Interns will also participate in weekly meetings in which they will discuss their challenges and share successful educational strategies.
