Mission Statement

The mission of Alameda Reads is to serve Alamedans who want to improve their reading and writing skills so they can reach their potential as workers, parents, community members, and lifelong learners.

Description

Our learners are adults who did not acquire the basic reading and writing required to function fully in our society. Alameda Reads provides a combination of one-to-one, individual goal oriented tutoring and small group instruction to help our learners meet their literacy needs.

Alameda Reads aims to assist adults to become literate enough to take other classes and use community resources independently. Unique among other types of Adult Education programs in the United States, Alameda Reads uses oneon one meetings with trained volunteer tutors. Learners receive individual attention to achieve their personal literacy goals in both reading and writing. Tutoring is relationship centered, free and confidential. Supplemental small group instruction through workshops, classes, and other activities provides additional learning opportunities for all program participants. Another unique aspect of Alameda Reads is its use of volunteers to create, support and manage some of the activities that provide additional learning opportunities for its students. Some of the programs supported by specialized volunteer contributions include computer lab specialists, organization and training of audio books, and web page design and management.
