Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide all Somaliland women the opportunity for healthy pregnancies and safe childbirths, to provide all infants with the healthy start they deserve, and to eliminate the practice of Female Genital Mutilation or 'female genital cutting.’
Description
There are approximately 175,000 births in Somaliland every year. Somaliland has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world: 1,000 - 1,400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births with an infant mortality rate of 73 deaths per 1,000 births. Approximately 90% of these maternal deaths are preventable. Currently, less than 10% of births are attended by skilled personnel.
Edna’s Hospital will increase the survival rate by training and equipping 1,000 midwives to provide pregnant Somaliland women with medical monitoring, treatment and education. Community midwives typically assist with 150-200 births per year, while some may deliver as many as 400 babies a year. With the Edna Adan Hospital’s historical survival rate 75% higher than the national average, our immediate mission is to spread this success to all corners of Somaliland.
We work to provide Somaliland women and children with skilled public health professionals, improvement of health care facilities, and the provision of needed equipment and supplies. Edna Adan Hospital Foundation is dedicated to funding and advocating for initiatives that improves the status of health care and the quality of life for women in children in Somaliland and the surrounding regions.
