Description
In partnership with the East YMCA, the John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary School Extended Learning Program offers qualifying students the opportunity to participate in a free, academically focused after-school program. Students participate in classroom activities and other educational and enrichment activities designed to increase achievement and support the school day classroom/curriculum. Overall, the Extended Learning program serves approximately 100-120 K-6 grade students. Students are selected to enroll in the program based on their academic performance. For grades 3-6, state standardized test scores are primarily used to identify qualifying students. For those students who do not have MN standardized test scores, classroom teachers provide recommendations. To assess K-2 grade students, classroom teachers conduct diagnostic reading assessemtns (DRAs) to identify students in need of additional reading support. Core program components are literacy, homework help, arts and humanities, character development, health and wellness, fitness, science and technology, service-learning, social competence, and conflict resolution.
