Mission Statement

The School of Digital Media and Design exists to develop exemplary communication skills in students through authentic, media-based experiences in an environment of high academic and social expectations.

Description

We have taken a bold new approach to education centered around the theme of media and design.

Kearny Digital Media and Design is one of four small autonomous schools in the Kearny High Educational Complex funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. And it's working. After graduation, an impressive 95 percent of students go on to college.

DMD is a thematic, interdisciplinary, project-based environment focused on motivating students to master academic and industry standards through authentic real-world challenges.

There is no other school like it in the county. What is exceptional about our students is that they overcome many challenges to succeed. Our very diverse students speak more than 14 languages. Most arrive in 9th grade reading below grade level and failing algebra. Our school operates on the philosophy that, when provided with an environment of academic intensity and targeted support, all students can rise to high levels of academic achievement. Some students become so motivated they graduate early, and others launch their college career while still in high school.

Our teachers engage students in authentic media project experiences. At each grade level, students must demonstrate mastery of their subject before an audience of academic and industry professionals. We hold students accountable for their own learning, and they rise to meet the challenge. Come see DMD in action.
