Mission Statement

The mission of the Washington Reading Corps is to improve reading abilities of K-6 students across Washington State. This is achieved through research-based tutoring of struggling readers and effective collaborations among schools, family, community members, National Service, businesses, and state partners.

Description

The volunteer tutoring position entails volunteering as little as 30 minutes per week to provide extra reading help to struggling students. This is achieved through a variety of resources such as training in phonics and phonemic awareness (the ability to recognize individual sounds). We also have access to various tutoring books such as the Open Court series, and Read Naturally. These programs are the mandated teaching materials used to teach reading comprehension and fluency to the students.

Our team is based out of Bremerton Washington at West Hills Elementay on National Ave, but there are multiple sites in and around Kitsap County and if you are interested in working in a school closer to home we would be happy to give you the contact information for WRC members in your area.
