Mission Statement
The mission of Run Free Texas is to show at-risk youth healthy ways to alternatively channel their energy and passion into activities that will result in a decrease in self-compromising behaviors. We do this by introducing youth to the physical and mental health benefits of being physically active; and by building a strong support system, comprised of teachers, family and positive community members; surrounding at-risk youth with encouragement, support and healthy alternatives in order to help them succeed and positively impact their communities.
Description
Run Free Texas serves the Williamson County Juvenile Probation Department with a free 12-week running/walking program for youth (10-17) that are going through the court process or are under the supervision of a Juvenile Probation Officer. Participants are referred from Williamson County Juvenile Services and receive community service hours for each practice they attend. Throughout the program, guest speakers such as coaches, local athletes and successful entrepreneurs are invited to speak to participants about goal setting, success, and healthy habits. The youth then complete the program by participating in a community race, which helps diminish negative stigmas that are attached to at-risk youth and their involvement with the law, leaving participants with a sense of accomplishment and ultimately reducing recidivism. Upon successful completion, participants can apply for mentorship and/or to receive a scholarship for a sports club membership.
