The HIGH (Helping Individuals Go Higher) Program at Wayne State University works to ensure that no student has to abandon the dream of earning a degree at the university due solely to housing or financial challenges.
Since 2013, Wayne State University has sponsored a program unique on college campuses. The HIGH Program assists students in good academic standing and currently registered, who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless and who have exhaustedal all regular sources of financial or other aid. Students who have some capacity to pay a portion of their need may receive direct assistance for housing or turition in addition to referral to other campus or community resources.
The non-profit HIGH Program raises funds from WSU faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader Detroit and Southeast Michigan communities. The Program, under the direction of WSU First Lady Jacqueline Wilson, is currently in the midst of a campaign to raise an endowment of at least $5 million that will support an annual assistance program for 50 students.
Volunteers from the university and community provide time and expertise to develop and maintain ongoing programs on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumbler), planning, scripting, shooting and editing audiovisual materials for marketing, public relations and fundraisimg projects, building and managing electronic databases, helping with ongoing office tasks, and public awareness programs on campus and in Detroit.
