Mission Statement
This cultural memory initiative underscores the power of the human imagination in overcoming extreme adversity.
It draws on the wartime story of Joseph Skakun dramatized in the book, "On Burning Ground" (St. Martin’s Press), a memoir of existential daring and extraordinary masquerade.
This project emphasizes the connections between and inspiration in all religious and spiritual experience. It highlights great value in interfaith and interethnic dialogue.
Description
This nonprofit is working to:
• Develop an essay contest based on themes in the project’s foundational text, "On Burning Ground."
• Organize study groups on both high school and college levels to draw parallels between this survival story and current events including refugee crises, wars and intolerance.
• Assemble members of different faith communities to bridge religious and ethnic divides that stir conflict.
• Initiate a film documentary, musical adaption, and dance perfomances to further explore these themes .
