Mission Statement

The mission of The King Arts Complex is to enrich and improve the quality of life in our community and society, creating enhanced understanding and harmony by preserving, presenting and fostering the contributions of African Americans through creative expression and education.

Description

Each season, The King Arts Complex presents national African-American dance companies. Ranging from a variety of dance styles such as ballet, tap, African and modern dance, performances at The Complex are sure to be dynamic! Accompanied with these performances are community outreach programs in which the dance company works with schools, educators, recreation centers, and other organizations. The Complex also hosts a variety of dance education programs as part of the evening, weekend and summer offerings for children.

Located in the historic near east side district known as the "Cradle of Jazz", The King Arts Complex honors this musical heritage by presenting national and local jazz musicians throughout the year as well as hosting the Heritage Festival in the summertime. The Complex also features an annual Gospel Extravaganza with some of the area's finest gospel musicians. Other musical genres are also presented such as Hip-Hop, R & B, and Blues. Music is a foundation for many of the educational courses offered at The King Arts Complex.

In addition to our support of the local acting community, The King Arts Complex hosts national theater performances. The Complex presents productions featuring local youth, theater workshops and other educational programming. These programs can be enjoyed by everyone! Extending this artistic form to the youth in the community, schools throughout Central Ohio can bring their students to our matinee children's performance series hosted during the school year.

Contemporary authors join The King Arts Complex for lively discussions on topics that range from, but are not limited to, civil rights, disabilities, the arts, healthcare and education. Books are available for purchase and can be autographed by the author.

The Elijah Pierce Gallery presents a wide range of historical and contemporary exhibitions which include painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, and decorative arts. A rich variety of programs and services are available to the public such as:

  • Exhibitions of local, national, and international artists
  • School tours of exhibitions
  • Gallery talks and hands-on workshops in art education
  • Study guides and resource materials
  • Jr. Docent guided tours
