Mission Statement

The mission of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault is to reduce the trauma and incidence of sexual violence by providing treatment and promoting prevention of sexual abuse, incest, molestation and rape in a culturally sensitive manner. The Center accomplishes this through the provision of services including crisis intervention, advocacy, mental health therapy, prevention education and professional training.

Description

The Center provides 24-hour crisis intervention services to survivors of sexual violence and their families. The Center staffs a bilingual 24-hour crisis line in English and Spanish as well as a 24 hour Sexual Assault Resource Service (SARS). Through this service The Center sends out trained volunteers to local Tucson hosptials to advocate for survivors directly after the occurence of sexual trauma. Volunteers work heavily with law enforcement and other community reponse organizations throughout this hospital process. Lastly, the Crisis Department has a TTY phone specifically for the deaf and hard of hearing population. This service is currently available during business hours M-F 8am-5pm. In order to run all of these services successfully we rely heavily on volunteer advocates to provide these services after hours. All crisis services advocates must go through a 41-hour training before taking shifts. In addition to the Crisis Services Department, The Center also houses a Community Education and Outreach Department, where volunteers can learn about educating the community on sexual violence and tabling events. Education and prevention is done at schools, community centers, organizations, and public events. This too requires some training, which will be provided.
