Description

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to prepare students to meet the requirements for admission to 4 year colleges and universities. Students enroll in advanced history, English, math, science, foreign language classes, and in the AVID elective class. In the AVID class, students are tutored by college students and taught skilss necessary to be successful in college preparatory classes. AVID students also learn about colleges and universities (especially the application and financial aid processes) and prepare for college admission tests such as the SAT and ACT. They also take field trips to college campuses and cultural events and have guest speakers from the community speak in the class. Tutor "certification" is available through Fall training sessions taking place here in Ventura County. AVID is a nation-wide program with "certification" being recognized when transferring to another state.
