Mission Statement

The North Carolina Freedom Monument Project is dedicated to bringing all citizens of North Carolina together through grassroots engagement to construct in the state capital an enduring landmark in the form of a "Freedom Grove" park incorporating a walkway of works of public art in stone and water, words and shapes, that gives tribute to the struggle for freedom, especially by African Americans, and inspires all citizens to insure the means toward freedom for all, both economically and politically.

Description

NCFMP is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a 30 member biracial board of directors and a 12 member distinguished advisory panel, plus a small paid and unpaid staff, to gather ideas about freedom from representatives across the state, transmit those ideas to professional artist competitors, select a winning artist team, manage site selection (including state agency approval processes), conduct a capital fundraising campaign with a goal of $3.5 million, carry out a grassroots fundraising campaign (every ciizen has ownership) to provide for the maintenance of the Park and to fund programming events for the public, and finally, to construct the Park.
