Mission Statement

Friends of the Children is a revolutionary mentoring program that connects our city's most vulnerable children with paid, professional mentors, whom we call Friends, until their high school graduation date. We help statistically at-risk children develop the relationships, goals, and skills necessary to avoid or break the cycles of poverty, abuse, and violence in order to become contributing members of society .

Description

Friends-Boston represents a relatively new approach to mentoring in two major ways: it uses full-time paid professionals, not volunteers, and it commits to assisting children for 12 years -- from first grade through high school. After careful screening and extensive training, Mentors (Friends) are matched with children (Achievers) who would benefit from having a positive adult influence. Achievers are assigned to a Friend, who serves as a role model, counselor, life coach, and advocate by guiding, nurturing, and supporting the Achievers consistently throughout their school years. With the help of Friends, Achievers develop the relationships, goals and skills necessary to overcome challenges that impact their lives.
