I have been volunteering with YSA for about a year now. During the pandemic, it was a great way for me to safely support and stay connected with my local community. I learn valuable skills every time I go such as how to use a chop saw, build walkways, and assemble a yurt. It has been incredible to witness this tiny homes village flourish under the care of all the volunteers and artists. If you're looking for an outdoor, hands-on experience, this is it!

Youth Spirit Artworks got me through the pandemic in fine style, helping to build the Tiny House Village for youth without homes in East Oakland. It's been a fantastic opportunity to revive almost-defunct carpentry skills under the most patient and humorous leadership of Rolf Bell, and to receive inspiration from the miracle woman who envisioned this project (and others), Sally Hindman. Meeting wonderful village residents, too many to mention, and other volunteers -- working and laughing together -- what an opportunity! I am infinitely grateful.

The organization was extremely kid friendly. Although I have no experience in construction, I was still give a number of fun activities to help with such as watering plants, painting houses, and varnishing wood. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet very kind people and get outside for once! (:
