"To pursue the study of astronomy...to maintain quality public education and outreach programs to bring the results of astronomical research to the general public."
Lowell Observatory was founded in 1894 by Harvard-trained mathematician Percival Lowell. Since that time, the Observatory's research has resulted in exciting achievements including the discovery of Pluto and the first evidence of the expanding nature of the universe. Our staff continues this commitment to research and outreach today. About 80,000 visitors annually learn about astronomy and history through tours, telescope viewing, special events and exhibits.
